Chapter Fifteen

“Go away, Shadow. It’s not time.” Annie rolled over in bed and started to drift off again.

The opposite side of the bed sank down. Shadow chuffed low in his throat. Annie grumbled and swatted behind her. She missed him. The bed sank down even more, and she found herself assaulted with Shadow’s tongue.

She popped up, pushing her silly dog away. “You get off this bed right now, Shadow. Darn it, now I have to change the bedding. Are you happy now?”

He gazed at her in the darkness with those baleful eyes. His offense increased by the ridiculous thing sitting down—on the mattress. She groaned.

I don’t need to throw the bed out. I don’t need to throw the bed out. No germs here.

She shooed him off the bed. “What are you thinking, mister?”

Shadow of course didn’t answer, but Annie knew right away why he awakened her from her sleep. Something stirred in the house. Fear gripped her as she saw a shadow shift beneath her closed door. She swallowed.

Her puppy didn’t rush over to the door, and he didn’t appear to be up in arms that a stranger had invaded. Perhaps Aunt Bridge couldn’t sleep. Annie climbed out of bed. A cup of warm milk might help her aunt to settle. Annie had planned to suggest to her aunt that they hire a lawyer in the morning, but maybe if she told her now, her aunt could rest.

She started over to the door and then stopped. A board in the hall creaked. Annie knew her house better than anyone, and with all her adventures she had crept around it at various hours. She knew the sounds the floor made when she creeped about on tiptoe.

Instinct drove Annie to press her ear against the door and then ease it open a crack. She was in time to see Aunt Bridge illuminating her way down the stairs with her cell phone light. Now what was she up to?

“Good boy, Shadow. You’ve got good instincts.”

Annie dressed quickly and shoved her feet into a pair of slippers. She double-timed it to the stairs and heard the side door creak open and close. A car started up. Annie bounded down the stairs and slipped and slid to the door. By the time she reached it, Aunt Bridge was gone.

The next few minutes were spent looking for her keys. When she found them, she ran outside only to recall her phone. Behind the wheel of her car, she called Aunt Bridge. The phone rang four times and went to voicemail.

“Surely she hasn’t run.”

Annie’s stomach knotted. She ran back in the house and up to the bedroom she had given her aunt to sleep in. The suitcase lay in the closet. As far as she could tell, all of the clothes Aunt Bridge had brought to her house were still there. The few jewelry pieces she had also taken from her mahogany jewelry armoire lay neatly on top of the dresser Annie had Flynn place in the room.
